Mordhorst-Mitchell Monster-Mash
Candlewood Lake Opener 2013

Some caught fish, some didn't...Some had good bags, some had really good bags....And then there were the two Hawg-sacs mustered up by Jason Mordhorst & Scott Mitchell, both weighing limit sacs of smallies of 19.08 lbs and 19.01 lbs respectively, both by way of the good 'ole spider grub.  These two Bergenittes had more than banner days!  When asked, Jason reported a full day's worth of fish-catchin!  Based on a little research done by our own Sean Combs, Jason had the 2nd heaviest 5-fish limit tournament winning weight on record for a Bergen member on Candlewood, 2nd only to Rob Curtis (20.07lbs in 2011)!  Kudos to the entire Bergen club as well, as the total weight for the day of 278.13lbs was Bergen's 4th overall heaviest weight ever caught at Candlewood! (1st:  327.14lbs - 4/29/09, 2nd:  303.15lbs - 8/8/09, 3rd:  303.06lbs - 4/26/11).

Here are the best of the rest along with Lunker winner....

Finishing in 3rd Place was Mr. Finesse himself, Mike Rinaldi.  Mike came to the scales with a mixed-bag limit of 4 smallmouths & 1 largemouth weighing 16lbs, 5oz.  This was a more than respectable limit which he caught mostly by fishing spider-grubs slowly.  Hair jigs & crankbaits accounted for some fish as well.  Way to go Mike!

In 4th Place, fishing his first tourney as a Bergen member was Vern Gatson.  Fishing spider-grubs in 15-20 feet, Vern bagged a 5-fish smallmouth limit of 15lbs, 14oz.  Nice first tourney and great job Vern!

Our 5th Place finisher was Bergen's perennial Co-Angler Extraordinaire and 2012's Co-Angler of the Year Frank Freguletti.  Frank used a unique combination of crankbaits & rattletraps to bag a 5-fish limit of smallies weighing 13lbs, 12 oz.  Once again, Frank has the rest of us co-anglers starting our year looking up!  Great job and nice start Frank!

Lunker Honors went to last year's 5th Place finisher for Angler of the Year, Eddie Schichman.  His 5lb, 4oz largemouth caught on a Cabin Creek spider was enough to grab a cool $150!  See you at Sizzler Eddie!

With a recent change in venue from Lake Lillinonah, the Bergen Club will fish Lake Zoar in Connecticut on May 11th, less than a couple of weeks from now.  Historically a stingy fishery, the guys will be looking to break some club records, as the top 3 bags to come out of Zoar for Bergen are held by Nick Albano (10lbs , 3oz), Bill Vella (10lbs, 2oz) & Kirk Stober (8lbs, 6oz).

 See you there!
