A Big One for Big Jack

Like Mark Scocco said, Bergen’s first tournament of 2014 is one for the record book. We weighed in a record 350-9 lbs of Candlewood bass and all were released alive! John Hayden and his tournament committee did a great job in running the event and despite the non-stop wind everyone enjoyed a safe and productive day. Water temps ran around 47 to 51 degrees and compared to the last few years, the big lake was colder than usual. A cool wind was howling all day and the sky was generally cloudy – fortunately it didn’t rain.

Vern Gatson was the only angler to break the 18 pound mark with 18-3 and he did it with spider grubs worked deep. All of his 1st Place bass were big smallies and for his remarkable effort, Vern garnishes the first Bergen of 2014 – Nice Going! Vern was not done yet – fishing with Top Water Bass on Thursday, Vern won another tournament with 20 PLUS! Congrats on the Double Header!

Bergen rookie Chris Liobis did not pre-fish yet boated 20 bass for a five fish limit of 17-7! Using only jerkbaits, Chris caught all of his bass 4 to 15 feet deep. His smallie/largemouth ratio was around 50/50. Coming in at 2nd Place, congrats to a great start!

For 3rd Place, Mark Filippini used a suspending jerkbait to cull out a nice 17-2 limit that included one largemouth and four smallies. Not sure if Mark pre-fished Candy, but he definitely has been out fishing – caught a 7 pounder on Highland Lakes last week.

Fishing with Vern, big Jack Erdei was on the money with the big bite. Jack used a Big jerkbait to nail a Big Mama bass at 6-1. Jack not only won the six pound lunker pool but the regular lunker pool and nailed down a part of 4th Place with 16-8! All of his bass, except one on a spider grub, were caught with the big jerkbait. Way to go Jack!

For a part of 4th Place with 16-8, John Messinger weighed in a mixed bag of smallies and largemouth. John pre-fished on Tuesday and did fairly well with jerkbaits and spider grubs. On Wednesday, it was the jerkbait that worked for John. Nice Job!

Arm surgery or fishing as a non-boater didn’t slow down Bergen veteran John Ernest who culled out a nice 5th Place bag at 16-6. For a great start to 2014, John used a combination of jerkbaits worked off points and spider grubs worked at 10 feet.

Next up is Lake Lillinonah via the new boat launch – finally, no need to beach the boats by rocks! Wishing everyone another great day on the water!     - Nick Albano
