Some BIG weights at South Bay

Perfect weather and post spawn water temps in the low seventies greeted the Bergen Bassmasters on June 21. Lake levels were a few feet higher than last year and water clarity was below normal. This 3rd Points event of the year was once again, well run by John Hayden and the tournament committee.

Mark Filippini had a less than stellar pre-fishing experience but was in the zone when it mattered. On Saturday, Mark weighed in an incredible 21 pounds of largemouth and smallmouth to take 1st Place by a few pounds. For most of his bass, Mark worked a Zoom Fluke in 5 to 10 feet of water. He also nailed a big LMB on a black jig. In addition to 1st Place, Mark split the Lunker Award with Dave Lipari; they both weighed in 5-2 largemouth bass. Nice going Mark and Dave!

John Ernest weighed in a hefty bag at 18-12. Normally such weight wins a tournament but John’s efforts were great and he owes it all to his favorite Top Water lure. John bagged 4 largemouth bass and one smallie, and they were all caught early in the AM. After this 2nd Place finish, John is now gearing up for back to back candy night events.

Big Jack Erdei used Big 12 inch worms to weigh in a Big 16 pound bag of largemouth bass. Nothing fancy to report, Jack simply worked behind his boater and tossed the snake for a 3rd Place finish. Nice Job Jack!

Vern Gatson continues with an excellent year with Bergen and looks to be an early favorite for Angler of the Year. Vern worked swim baits around Ticonderoga where the water was a little clearer. He caught these fish early in 2 to 8 feet of water. Later in the day, he nailed a few on 4 inch Texas rigged Senkos. Vern’s bag at 15-8 pounds was good enough for 4th Place.

Rounding out the Top Five was Wayne Wilken with a nice 14-13 limit of largemouth bass. Like Mark, Wayne used a Fluke in 3 to 6 feet of water.

Next up – Candlewood Night LTD Open 7/19, then Candlewood Night Points 7/26: Members should gear up for night fishing, and that means: Extra Clothing, Rain Gear, Head Lamps and Flashlights and Insect Repellant. Speed limit at night is 25 miles per hour and navigation lights must remain on all night.
